POLITICAL DIVISION

Peru is divided in 24 departments and one constitutional district: The Callao. 

  • AMAZONAS: It is in the north of the country, its capital is Chachapoyas. Here, not only is fascinating the beauty of its landscapes but also the existence of archaeological ruins like Kuelap. 
    ANCASH: It is in the center of the country, its capital is Huaraz. The greater wealth of this place is in the National Park Huascarán that protects vegetation and rocky formation of the White Mountain. Also, there are interest archaeological centers, like the ruins of the Chavín Culture.
  • APURIMAC: It is in the center of the country, its capital is Abancay. Here it emphasizes by the beauty of his colonial temples of Cocharcas, Caipe, Vilcabamba, Mamara and Ayhuanca; as well as its archaeological rest, like the Stone of Sayhuite. 
  • AREQUIPA: It is located to the southwest of the country, its capital is Arequipa. Here, there are big volcanos, like: Misti, Ampato and Chachani. In addition, we can see other tourist attractions: the Convent of Santa Catalina, the bath of Yura and Socosani, the lagoons of Mejía and the caverns of Socobaya.
  • AYACUCHO: It is located to the south of the country, its capital is Ayacucho. Here, we can find the National Reserve Pampas Galeras, the 33 colonial churches from Huamanga, the ruins of Wari and Wiqchana and the fortressof Vilcashuamán. 
  • CAJAMARCA: It is in the north of the country, its capital is Cajamarca. This place is called “The Cradle of the Peruanidad" because, here was the first meeting between the Incas and Spanish. It is interesting the Baths of the Inca and the Hot Waters, the ruins of Kuntur Wasi, the rocky group of Cumbemayo and the monumental Belen. 
  • CUZCO: It is located to the center and south of the country, its capital is Cuzco. The region known as "SacredValley of the Incas" concentrated most of territories for the agriculture of the Tahuantinsuyo. Its main tourist attraction is Machu PicchuCity, which is considered cultural patrimony of the humanity.
  • HUANCAVELICA: It is located to the center of the country, its capital is Huancavelica. Here, we can see more of 20 natural lagoons, among them: Choclococha, the greatest of all of them. 
  • HUÁNUCO: It is located to the center of the country, its capital is Huánuco. Here exists a variety ecological atmosphere. The glaciers and lagoons of the mountain of Huayhuash attract thousands of national and international tourists. 
  • ICA: It is located in the south of the country, its capital is Ica. It is important the Reserve of Paracas and the ruins of Chincha, Tambo Colorado, Paracas, Huaytará, Ica and Palpa, and the Nazca Lines. 
  • JUNIN: It is in the center of the country, its capital is Huancayo. This is a zone of beautiful attractive landscapes, like the National Reserve of Junín and Convent of Ocopa.
  • LA LIBERTAD: It is in the northwest of the country, its capital is Trujillo. This place is known like “The City of the Eternal Spring". Their colonial large houses, the Chan ChanCity and, the Reserve and Sanctuary of Calipuy are the most visited places in Peru.
  • LAMBAYEQUE: It is in the northwest of the country, its capital is Chiclayo. Here, exists a variety of important archaeological vestiges like the BrunningMuseum and the pyramids of Túcume.
  • LIMA: It is in the center of the country, its capital is Lima and capital of Peru simultaneously. This place is called "The City of the Kings” because it has archaeological, colonial and cultural tourist attractions that make Lima the center of attention of the tourists.
  • LORETO: It is in the northeast of the country, its capital is Iquitos. It is the greatest department of Peru. It has the most mighty and navigable river of the world, the Amazon.
  • MADRE DE DIOS: It is in the east of the country, its capital is Puerto Maldonado. This place has an enormous tourist potential in flora and fauna concentrated in the National Park of the Manu. 
  • MOQUEGUA: It is in the south of the country, its capital is Moquegua. It has tourist attractions like the thermal sources and the BaulCity.
  • PASCO: It is in the center of the country, its capital is Cerro de Pasco. This place has lagoons, the Rock Forest of Huayllay, the National Park Yanachaga-Chemillen and the Communal Reserve Yanesha. 
  • PIURA: It is located in the northwest of the country, its capital is Piura. This place is famous by its well-known lagoons of the Huaringas and the Place of Hunting the Angolo.
  • PUNO: It is in the southeastern of the country, its capital is Puno. The TiticacaLake is the main center of attention of the tourist because it provides peculiar climatic characteristics to the place. 
  • SAN MARTIN: It is in the north of the country, its capital is Moyabamba. This place has a variety of tropical humid forests of great economic and strategic value. 
  • TACNA: It is located in the south of the country, its capital is Tacna. Here, we can find The Caves of Rupestrian Painting of Toquepala, which are a testimony of the presence of the Peruvian man since very remote times in the earth.  
  • TUMBES: It is located in the northwest of the country, its capital is Tumbes. Here we find tourist attractions like the Architectonic Place Head of Cow, the National Sanctuary Manglares of Tumbes and the National Park Hills of Amotape.  
  • UCAYALI: It is located in the Peruvian central forest, its capital is Pucallpa. This place presents 3 natural regions of the forest: Eyebrow of Forest, Low and HighForest that are furrowed by great rivers that make this place a big tourist attraction of the country.
